Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has officially joined Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as their Assistant Coach for the upcoming IPL 2026 season. The franchise announced the move as part of its renewed strategy to bring more international experience and tactical depth into the coaching staff.

Watson, one of the most successful T20 players in history, has represented Australia in all formats, scoring over 10,000 international runs and taking more than 280 wickets. His vast experience, including two IPL titles as a player, is expected to strengthen KKR’s leadership setup both on and off the field.
Reacting to the announcement, Watson expressed his excitement about joining the two-time IPL champions. He said, “It’s a privilege to work with a franchise that has such a passionate fanbase and rich legacy. I’m looking forward to contributing to KKR’s success in the upcoming season.”
The KKR management also welcomed the move, saying Watson’s arrival will help mentor young players and bring valuable insights into the team’s strategy. CEO Venky Mysore stated that his presence will add “crucial balance and energy” to the coaching group, which already includes several experienced professionals.
After a mixed IPL 2025 campaign, KKR is aiming for a strong comeback in 2026. With Watson joining the setup, the franchise hopes to refine its squad and tactics ahead of the mega auction, targeting a more consistent performance throughout the season.
