India’s promising middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer is now facing serious doubts about his availability for the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa cricket team. The team will host the Proteas from November 30, but recent medical updates suggest Iyer may not be fit in time.

Iyer suffered a severe injury during the third ODI against Australia national cricket team in Sydney. He sustained a lacerated spleen and internal bleeding after a diving catch attempt, which led to his oxygen levels dropping dangerously to 50 and left him unable to stand for several minutes.

According to reports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been informed about Iyer’s condition, and selection authorities say they do not want to rush his return. The medical team estimates that more than a month of recovery will be required before he can be match-fit.

The potential absence of Iyer represents a significant setback for India’s ODI squad. As their vice-captain, he has been a key figure in team strategy and batting plans. His unavailability might force the team to rethink batting order combinations and provide opportunities to newer players.

With the series less than three weeks away, the team management will monitor Iyer’s fitness status closely. If he doesn’t clear full match-fitness tests, India may have to move ahead without one of their premier batting assets for the crucial home series.
